Are you considering a swimming pool? If you have the room and enough funds then why not? Swimming pools are quite literally cool! As well as being highly fashionable they are of course, beneficial. Swimming pools are a great source of well being and fitness. Nothing clears the head and keeps you fitter than a few lengths of swimming every morning.

Experts agree that swimming is one of the best exercises you can do so a pool will offer you plenty of health benefits. Remember though that unless you are using a heater for your pool, you will only be able to use it during the summer months unless you are lucky enough to live in a year long warm climate. If you are building a swimming pool for health reasons and don't have the climate you should consider a heated pool otherwise all that good work through the summer will be lost come winter.

There are several factors to consider when looking at the various swimming pools available with the 2 main ones being how much room can you spare and how much can you budget for it.

When considering the first remember to allow for a patio or deck area surrounding your new pool and for the second, allow for on going maintenance costs such as cleaning and chemicals. Extra room may also be required for the filtering system, pumps and heater, dependent on your choice of swimming pool.

As well as having to meet the various swimming pool building codes you may want to install some sort of fencing to keep uninvited guests from falling in. There are many accidental deaths in swimming pools every year. If you have children or grand children, you will want to think carefully about the safety issues involved in having your own swimming pool.

When it comes to building your pool, again you will have many choices and decisions to make. If you are considering building your own, be aware that in many communities a licensed professional is required to carry out the work so check with your local building and planning office. Its not quite as simple as digging a hole, lining with concrete and filling with water! A drainage system, water lines for the skimmer and heating system etc. all have to be worked out and allowed for which is why its best to let the pro's build your swimming pool.

Types and materials used.

If you live in an area with soft ground such as near the beach and the ground is not suitable for concrete a fiberglass pool could be an option. Fiberglass swimming pools are positioned into a hole in the ground. This does away with the need to pour concrete in situ and line with heavy duty vinyl which needs to be replaced every decade or so.

The alternative to an in ground pool is of course, the above ground version. Above ground swimming pools come in all shapes and sizes but tend not to be more than 5ft deep. This is because of the enormous pressure placed on the sides of these types of swimming pools. They are usually made of metal with braces designed to support the sides. The metal is then covered in vinyl, much the same way as a concrete pool. A deck is then constructed to the height of the pool to allow access.

Above ground swimming pools are much more affordable than in ground pools as there is is far less work involved. They can be self installed, zoning laws permitting, to save even more.
