Swimming Pool Pumps
The most important piece of equipment you will own for your pool is the swimming pool pump. It controls the
cleanliness and clarity of your pools water. Without the pump, water cannot circulate through the filter and if you
have one, through the heater. Both the filter and the heater are only as good as the pump that is feeding them.
The key to using the right swimming pool pump for your set up will be whether your pool is above ground or in
ground and how high the water has to be pumped to reach the filter. An in ground pump usually has to work a little
harder than one located above ground and many installers will recommend a pump with a rating slightly higher than
the one you would actually need. By choosing a swimming pool pump bigger than that needed means the pump doesn't
have to work flat out. Because it is working comfortably within itself it will last a lot longer.
One important factor for any type of swimming pool pump is that you should have easy access to the debris basket to
allow for daily cleaning. Allowing debris to build up can be detrimental to your pump and will reduce the amount of
water flowing into the filter.
Keep Units Together For Ease Of Maintenance
Ideally, although not always possible, an above ground swimming pool pump should be located next to the filtering
system and the heater to make daily maintenance tasks much more convenient for you. If the units are not together,
there may be a tendency to forget to check one or another. This could cause you to miss a sign of an impending
problem. All gauges on your swimming pool pump should also be checked religiously as per manufacturer's
recommendations, to insure it is in proper operation.
Keeping your swimming pool pump maintained according to the manufacturer's recommendation will not only make sure
your pump lasts as long as it is supposed to, but will also keep the warranty valid. Proper oiling and applying
grease to the fittings can keep it maintained and in good working order. Failing to look after your swimming pool
pump properly will mean that the pump will at some stage, fail.
If your pump does fail, the majority of swimming pool pumps can be replaced by the homeowner who has a little
mechanical knowledge. Most companies will ship overnight so you do not lose more than a day or two of the use of
your pool. However, if you are either in a hurry or not comfortable with fitting it yourself, there may be a few
companies in your area that can offer a same day service on your swimming pool pump.
